How do I know which Life Coach certification/training program to choose?

Hi there! I am Dr. Patrice Carter, The Coache's Coach and I want to share with you the essential practices of an effective coach certification training program as shared by Collins (2002) and Webb (2019).

Below are considerations:

Coaching Instruction should be live, interactive and “in the moment”.

The coaching instructor should model masterful coaching and should have passed an exam process based on coaching skills. Instruction should incorporate discovery and practice and large blocks of time should be invested to practice the skill of coaching.

Training should be focused on participants learning the Instructors worldview matters and should match your own.

These practices should be evident Practice individual coaching Practice coaching with other participants Practice coaching with other people

Live coaching feedback should be given to the Coach trainee through mentor coaching sessions

Practical considerations you should take into account:

  • Do you feel comfortable talking to your potential Coach Instructor?

  • Listen for passion, authenticity, ego, worldview, style, manner, humor and attitude.

  • Be aware of the questions the Coach Instructor asks you and how they’re asked.

  • Determine how much training experience the Coach has.

  • Ask what is included in the fee as well as the time commitment required/anticipated.
